BEST_: Paper Dragon is Watching You
This is a great illusion, which you can make at home. It is worth the effort. The effect is that the paper dragon follows you around the room. It is very spooky. Click the left picture to see the end result, click the right picture for the design and print it.

  BEST_: Antique Yorick's Skull
Like the "Mystery Picture" posted earlier, this is a "retina burning" illusion from simpler times - before pop tarts, smart cars, reality TV & wars on terror... Ooh bit political there.

  Vertical Bent Lines
Similar to the horizontal versions of this illusion. The vertical lines are all straight.

  The Missing Square
Not really an illusion. More a classic geometric puzzle. See if you can work out what happened to the missing block?

  BEST_: Antique Mystery Picture
Follow the instructions on this antique card. It is a classic image impression on retina trick. Quite impressive, must have scared the willies out of people before Playstations and DVDs with surround sound :)

  Colour Blindness Test
This isn't an optical illusion, but it is interesting as I have read that 10% of the population are colorblind.

Instructions:

1) Click to enlarge.
2) If you see a 5 you are normal colour sight.
3) If you see a 2 you are probably Red/Green colour blind

  BEST_: Angry Face Calm Face
This is a very very spooky illusion, I have no idea how it works. Something to do with your brain interpreting detail where there is none. Proof that you should never believe your eyes.

Instructions:

1) Click the image to enlarge it
2) Examine the picture noting that the angry face is on the left.
3) Step backwards away from your monitor so that you are looking at the image from further away.
Effect: The faces appear to swap round!!!!!

  BEST_: Pink Dot Illusion
This one is one of my favourite illusions. It is truely spooky and makes everyone gasp in amazement.

First you have to click on the image to see the animated Gif properly. What you will see if a circle of pink dots which are disappearing.

The first spooky thing you will notice is that when one of the pink dots disappears it seems to leave a green ghost image behind. It gets better.

Stare at the centre of the image (the cross) for about 20 seconds. As you are staring you will see the pink dots disappear and are replaced by a single green blob moving around! Brilliant.

  Train Track Illusion
Another excellent example of how our brains are conditioned to understand the concept of perspective, even when there is none. The line at the top of this image appears to be much longer than the line at the bottom. That is because we think it is further away. Obviously it is not. Measure it and you will see.

  Small - Far Away
The figure on the right-hand side appears to be larger than his partners. This is an illusion. Our brains are conditioned to understand perspective. We assume that an object appearing further away in perspective must therefore be larger. What our brains don't seem to take into account is that this is a 2-D image.

  Black Light
Instructions:

2) Simply stare at the centre of the lightbulb up close for about 30 seconds.
3) then stare at a blank wall.

Effect: a large glowing light bulb will appear before your eyes and will start to change colour as your retina recovers.

  Broken Line?
As you probably have already guessed, the straight line that intercepts the three thick black lines is completely straight. But somehow it appears not to be. if you don't believe me, hold up a straight edge against the screen and you will see.

  Arrow Illusion
A classic illusion (which makes a great tiled backdrop for your desktop). All lines are the same length but the arrows pointing in and out appear to extend and shrink the line.

  Rippling Pond Illusion

  More Fake Grid Warping
Great example of a distorted grid. It wouldn't be an illusion if I didn't tell you that in fact the grid is perfectly square - there is no bulge. Your brain is just confused by the white and black dots in the grid which makes you THINK there is a bulge when there isn't! Don't believe me, look closer.

  The Floating Circle
The conflicting vertical and horizontal lines in this classic illusion cause a very unsettling effect on the visual centre of the brain. Print it out on a large piece of paper and put it on your wall at work - it will really annoy your colleagues.

  Parallel Horizontal Lines?

Yep you guessed it, the parallel horizontal lines in both these illusions are perfectly straight, but your brain is confused by the interference on the offset lines in the pattern. Don't believe me, then get a straight edge and hold it up against the screen.

  Moving Blur on Sharp Background

  Star Spangled Banner
Okay simple optical illusion:

Instructions:

1) Click on image
2) Stare at centre of the image for 30 seconds
3) Stare at white area

Effect: You see the American Flag, even with the stars if your brain has been conditioned that way :)

To blur or not to blur
Right - this one is taking advantage of your brain trying to fill in the gaps and create something that isn't there. Clearly when you look at both of these images the left hand image is clear and the right is blurry. But this trick will make you see detail (moving detail) in the right hand image when none exists.

Instructions:

Stare at the centre of the left hand box for 30 seconds
Then stare at the centre of the right hand box and watch!

  Disappearing Fog
This is an interesting illusions, click on it so you can see a larger image

Effect: Slowly the coloured fog will start to disappear and you will only see grey!

  Rippling Slime
Okay. Look closely at this image (click to enlarge). It is a series of parallel dots, there are NO waves in this picture. All the dots are set in a normal grid. Look very closely or get a straight edge if you don't believe me.

  Grey Dots

This is an oldie but goodie. There are no grey dots in this grid. It is simply a grid of 16 black squares.

  The Phantom Bulge

As usual click on the image to make it bigger, you will need to with this one. It is very interesting. If you look at the picture it appears that there is a big bulge in the centre. In fact there is not. Don't believe me, then get something straight and hold it against the screen, the lines are all straight.

  Zoom Rotate Discs
This is personally one of my favourite illusions. It is sometime hard to convince people that these images are not animated in some way.

Instructions:

Simply focus on the central dot
Then move your head back and forth
Effect: The discs will appear to spin

  Rotating Discs

This is an astounding optical illusion and the first to grace my blog. Amazingly the wheels on the image to the left are completely static. They do not move. The only reason your mind believes that they move is to somehow compensate for the complexity of the pattern.
