Not done one for a while. Here is a great vomit inducer. Click on the image and watch as the shapes ripple back and forth.
The white triangles are not there. Just the suggestion.
The stars appear to warp the red lines, but they are perfectly straight.
Like the "Mystery Picture" posted earlier, this is a "retina burning" illusion from simpler times - before pop tarts, smart cars, reality TV & wars on terror... Ooh bit political there.
Similar to the horizontal versions of this illusion. The vertical lines are all straight.
Not really an illusion. More a classic geometric puzzle. See if you can work out what happened to the missing block?
Follow the instructions on this antique card. It is a classic image impression on retina trick. Quite impressive, must have scared the willies out of people before Playstations and DVDs with surround sound :)
If you look around this image the circles appear to move.
Nice faux technical diagram, lots of impossible shapes to look at.
Good old reliable "is it a rabbit or is it a duck" effect :)
This isn't an optical illusion, but it is interesting as I have read that 10% of the population are colorblind.
Click on the image and watch as the cogs appear to turn. They are not moving!
This is a very very spooky illusion, I have no idea how it works. Something to do with your brain interpreting detail where there is none. Proof that you should never believe your eyes.
This one is one of my favourite illusions. It is truely spooky and makes everyone gasp in amazement.
Another excellent example of how our brains are conditioned to understand the concept of perspective, even when there is none. The line at the top of this image appears to be much longer than the line at the bottom. That is because we think it is further away. Obviously it is not. Measure it and you will see.
The figure on the right-hand side appears to be larger than his partners. This is an illusion. Our brains are conditioned to understand perspective. We assume that an object appearing further away in perspective must therefore be larger. What our brains don't seem to take into account is that this is a 2-D image.
Instructions:
As you probably have already guessed, the straight line that intercepts the three thick black lines is completely straight. But somehow it appears not to be. if you don't believe me, hold up a straight edge against the screen and you will see.
This is an interesting illusion. It appears that the image spirals into the distance, but look again. Just circles and nothing else.
Nice big version of the arrow illusion. As below both lines a & b are the same length.
The both of the circles in the centre of both sets of circles are the same size. Try telling your brain that.
A classic illusion (which makes a great tiled backdrop for your desktop). All lines are the same length but the arrows pointing in and out appear to extend and shrink the line.
The diagonal lines are all dead straight. They appear to curve as they intercept the circular patterns.
Not as good at the other floating pictures, but the square pattern appears to float above the background.
Great example of a distorted grid. It wouldn't be an illusion if I didn't tell you that in fact the grid is perfectly square - there is no bulge. Your brain is just confused by the white and black dots in the grid which makes you THINK there is a bulge when there isn't! Don't believe me, look closer.
The conflicting vertical and horizontal lines in this classic illusion cause a very unsettling effect on the visual centre of the brain. Print it out on a large piece of paper and put it on your wall at work - it will really annoy your colleagues.

Yep you guessed it - oldie but goodie - the two opposite diagonal lines are the same length.
This doesn't need much of an explanation, simply click on the image and marvel at the fact that you will see the blurred image moving on the sharp background. Woah, it is enough to make you feel quite ill.
Okay simple optical illusion:
Right - this one is taking advantage of your brain trying to fill in the gaps and create something that isn't there. Clearly when you look at both of these images the left hand image is clear and the right is blurry. But this trick will make you see detail (moving detail) in the right hand image when none exists.
This is an interesting illusions, click on it so you can see a larger image
Okay. Look closely at this image (click to enlarge). It is a series of parallel dots, there are NO waves in this picture. All the dots are set in a normal grid. Look very closely or get a straight edge if you don't believe me.

This is personally one of my favourite illusions. It is sometime hard to convince people that these images are not animated in some way.
